A Dream Come True…
My first year in the boat business was rough.
Debt was high, sales were slow and sleep was scarce. It was 2006, I’d just signed up to be the Rinker boat importer for Ireland and I had committed to a large (for me) order of stock boats. As I slogged away that first summer trying to shift my stock before the season was over, and generally wondering why this ‘boat selling’ thing wasn’t as easy as I had expected it to be, a welcome e-mail landed in my inbox.
I was invited to Rinker’s annual dealer meeting in Sarasota, Florida, USA.
Such was my naivety, I didn’t even know what a dealer meeting was!
But as I read on, it sounded to me like an all-expenses paid 4-day trip to Southwest Florida to play around in the Gulf of Mexico on Rinker’s entire new model line-up.
I couldn’t sign up fast enough… Count me in. I was there!
I was even starting to think that this boat dealer thing wasn’t such a bad gig after all!
The appointed date rolled around, and my wife and I jetted off to Florida.
The meeting was great. We were wined and dined. The resort was fantastic. The dock was right beside the pool and the jetties were chocked full of every model in Rinker’s line-up at our disposal for the weekend. I had died and gone to boat heaven.
Too good to be true, right?
Well, on day 3, I was presented with the cheque for my long weekend of free lunches and hospitality…
…It was time for my ‘sales meeting’.
Again, I was completely clueless at this stage of my career and I had no real idea what a sales meeting was.
I was educated fairly quickly.
I walked into a small room and was greeted by the Export Sales Representative and his lovely wife, who served as his assistant and sometime translator, since Mr. Export Sales was German and didn’t speak amazing English.
At this meeting my numbers for this current season were presented to me. I was really familiar with them because I still had most of those boats sitting in my showroom at home! It was then politely, but firmly, suggested to me that I order the same again plus say 30% for next season. It just so happened that we had the next hour completely free to fill in the order forms and get the whole thing signed up.
‘Oh great’, I thought.
This coastal paradise suddenly started to feel more like Guatanamo Bay than Sarasota Bay!
But, hardly one to admit my ignorance and own up to frankly terrible sales performance back home, I spent the next hour eagerly ticking order forms and picking options in a huge work of fiction that would do J.K. Rowling proud. When the time came to sign on the dotted line at the bottom I mumbled some nonsense about wanting to just double check everything in my room that evening and that I would have the forms ready for them first thing tomorrow morning.
What Mr Export Sales and his lovely wife didn’t realise was that I had absolutely no intention of signing anything on this particular weekend (lest I’d be bankrupt by Christmas) and indeed I would spend the next day and a half studiously avoiding them!
Such is the life of the high-flying boat sales executive…
Anyway, impressed by the forest of order forms that I had completed in their presence (and now safely tucked under my arm and destined for the bin), Mr Export Sales, who was an independent agent, kindly informed me that in addition to Rinker they also represented a few other brands that I may be interested in. He produced a bunch of brochures and carefully selected a particularly eye-catching one.
It was for Fountain boats and it had a stunning 40ft slab of fiberglass splashed across it’s cover. It was all go-faster stripes, power bulges, white water spray and bikinis.
I instantly fell in love.
Mr Export, not having the very best English and being generally a man of few words, handed me the brochure and said simply…
‘Fountain are the best’
I eagerly took the brochure, but knowing that I barely had the price of the taxi fare to the airport in my bank account (let alone the price of my next Rinker boat) I didn’t bother to discuss an order.
Since that day I have wanted to own a Fountain power boat.
And I finally got to realise that dream several months ago with this exceptional specimen that you see presented here.
Ok, it’s not brand new. But it’s damn close, with only 200 hours on the clock and in immaculate condition. It’s also one-of-a-kind, with a unique colour scheme and an outstanding specification.
It has everything you could want on such a boat, including a Generator, Air-Con, GPS, Radar, Vessel View Smart Craft System, Livorsi Controls, Electric Bolster Seating, Extended Swim Platform, Bow Thruster, Anchor Windlass, Sony Entertainment System, Cockpit Ice Maker, Etc, Etc, As well as the legendary Fountain build quality and performance.
This one can also appeal to the head as well as the heart…
With Diesel power in the form of a pair of Cummins Mercruiser 4.2L QSD motors pushing out 640HP total, this boat will hit 50mph without breaking the bank and she will cruise economically all day long at 30knots.
In my mind she really is the perfect fast weekender.
If I could afford to keep it I would. But I console myself with the fact that I got to take a season’s fun out of it and it was everything I’d hoped for and more.
Now it’s your turn to live the dream…
Check out the video tour to see just how special this boat is.
This boat is not to be confused with lesser sports cruisers like the Sealine SC35, Sea Ray 370, Sealine S42, Sealine S38, Regal 3760, Rinker 370, Rinker 380, Sea Ray 38, Cranchi Smeraldo 37, Cranchi Zaffiro 34, Jeanneau Prestige 34, or Gobbi 365. Her build quality is really a notch above this. To my mind her build and hull design is on a par with the likes of the Sunseeker Portofino range, Princess V40, Fairline Targa 38, Fairline Targa 40, Fairline Targa 43, Princess V42, or Hunton 36.
